Magnesium and Cystic Fibrosis

Magnesium and Pulmozyme - basically this article states that research was done to find the reason for Pulmozyme being ineffective for some patients. They found that these patients had low levels of magnesium. Once they were supplemented with oral Magnesium, the Pulmozyme was able to do its job of aiding in removal of mucus.

Shark Tank - this is the website I get a lot of my info from. The essence is that all the nasty things that grow in CF lungs are helped along by the acidic nature of the lungs. The solution to that problem is to create a more basic environment in the lungs. And this is what Magnesium can do. In addition to adding magnesium, there are many things you can change in your diet to create a more basic environment.

Magnesium and antibiotics
- Taking Magnesium and Antibiotics together can make both products ineffective. If the boys are on antibiotics, (which I cannot even say the last time we used them) we do switch their schedule around, as to ensure the most efficacy of all supplements/medications being taken.

Types of Magnesium Supplements
- I cannot say if all of this info is absolute fact. But it sums up all the research I have done and seems right-on. The Chelated Magnesium seems to be the best option. The best rule of thumb is to take it in small amounts throughout the day. And if it does give you a laxative result, that means you are taking too much or in too large of doses at one time.

  4. OO good info. I have thought about taking it. I think I will mention it at next CF appointment and see what the doctors have to say about it.

Do you read the no-excuses blog?

Mostly I look for ways to boost my immune system b/c it seems like preventive is the way to go.

And kudos to the breastfeeding part. How long did you nurse your kiddos?
