Cleaning Nebs

Okay, so here are all my supplies I need for sterilizing/sanitizing the boys' nebs.

Every time the boys finish a treatment, I wash off their nebs a bit and put them in a separate pasta strainer. I can fit 8 nebs inside this one. I love these things, I can store the used ones in them and then just lower them into my huge pot. I take out the fish masks, as I am afraid they will completely fall apart. I make sure the nebs are completely submersed in water, put a lid on and let them boil for 15 minutes. Water here takes about 25 minutes to boil, so I put a timer on for 40 minutes and I am free to do some other chores.

Once my timer goes off, I very carefully drain out most of the water and then with the lid on I shake the rest out over the sink.

I put the fish masks into the still boiling water and leave them in there for 7 minutes. I have yet to see any nebs turn into horrible globs of plastic, but I make for certain that my timer is on:)

After boiling the nebs, I place them on cookie sheets and put them in the oven, which is on the warm setting.  After 30 minutes, they are nice and dry.  We have a little magnet on our oven, it lets us know that nebs are in the oven and that they should be taken out prior to cooking anything else.  I attempted to make cookies one day and instead cooked the nebulizers:(

After the 30 minutes are up, I put the nebs back together and store them in this wonderful little storage container.

  1. I used to clean my daughter's with diluted bleach and water, but recently started boiling them. I notice they are slightly damaged, but still function.
I have a question. Typically, how long do your neb cups last?

  2. I have not noticed any damage to our nebs and I use them far past their suggested 6 months. Every once in a while, I add a couple tablespoons of vinegar in the boiling water to get rid of the hard water. I replace our nebulizers, when I see that they are taking longer than 20 minutes with hypersal

  3. I wash them with dish soap to ensure that all the sticky antibiotic is taken care of.
